Abstract:

Writing an article for online distribution in a way
that maximized the chances of citation hits, is different from preparing
one for print journals in some small, but important, respects. To be
cited, articles have to be visible in an electronic environment.
Therefore, publishing a high quality paper in scientific journals will
be a halfway of receiving citation in the future. The rest of the way is
advertising and disseminating the publications by using the proper
“Research Tools”. Familiarity with the tools allows the researcher to

"UNDERSTANDING THE MEDIATING ROLE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN VIRTUAL TEAM CONF" by Hritik Gupta and Stephen C. Wingreen

Abstract

Communication technology is recognized as an important component of a
virtual team (VT). Communication technologies other than social media
have been linked to VT conflicts by prior research. This research in
progress explores using social media to see if any improvements can be
made to conflicts in VTs. The researchers emphasize on the “feature
richness” of social media which is understood as affordances of social
media and it distinguishes social media from other commonly used
communication technologies in a VT environment. The researchers theorize
that “feature richness” rather than “media richness” of the
communication technology can be more beneficial for a virtual team since
it is hoped to simultaneously work towards reducing VT conflicts. The
researchers propose a conceptual research model that contributes to
understanding the mediating role that social media can play in virtual
team conflicts.

How much "Group" is there in online group work?  (Article)

Institute for Learning Technologies, Teachers College/Columbia University, United States

Abstract

The ability to work in groups across
time and space has become a frequent requirement for the workplace and
is becoming increasingly more common in higher education, but there is a
surprising lack of research on how online groups work. This study
applies analytical approaches used in studies of face-to-face classroom
"talk" to multiple groups in two asynchronous online high school
courses. We investigated two activities focused on group problem-solving
styles-one for deciding how to work as a group, and a second for
responding to the content of the assignment. We found successful groups
to have benefited from directive leadership, and the division of labor
amongst most groups to be in parallel rather than collaborative.

The Virtual Simulation: A Tool for Leadership Education in Global Corporations

Volume 33, Issue 5, July/August 2014, Pages 17-28

The Virtual Simulation: A Tool for Leadership Education in Global Corporations  (Article)

TRI Corporation, Beaverton, OR, United States

Fairfield University, United States

Abstract

Forward-thinking business leaders
have realized the wisdom of staging virtual simulations-team-based
education that can be conducted in a cost- and time-effective manner-to
prepare future leaders for the unexpected complexities of operating in a
global environment. Though not a replacement for face-to-face
interaction, virtual simulations can nonetheless mirror a company's
real-life challenges and opportunities and allow employees to learn from
and bond with fellow executives, all without the time and expense of
travel required for attending an in-residence program. The experiences
of several global leaders-Microsoft, General Electric, Dell, and Stanley
Black & Decker-reveal the benefits that organizations can glean
from virtual simulations, as well as the best practices for ensuring a
successful virtual training program that meets organizational
objectives. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

dc.description.abstract The increasing global nature of IT projects and the virtual nature
of project teams create numerous challenges for managers to effectively
manage communication, and place a risk on project execution. But what
exactly are these challenges? And how do Project Managers from IT
organisation respond to these challenges? The aim of this dissertation
will be to address these questions. In providing answers to these
questions, we can then see to what extent current project management is
effective in overcoming these challenges and to suggest recommendations
for the cases in which management fails. This thesis includes
qualitative research by providing a case-study of an Irish IT
organisation that has a globally distributed work-force. The research
focuses on the insights of Project Managers who each have a wealth of
experience in dealing with the issues at hand. As a counterbalance, this
study therefore includes observational research to objectively evaluate
the day to day reality of virtual teams in global projects. However,
even though a lot of communication management challenges are recognised
by Project Managers, it seems that a clearly explicated communication
plan is often lacking. To address this problem, this research attempts
to synthesise the main strategies into a unified strategy. The major
contribution from this research is to provide an in-depth theory about
communication management within virtual teams in global projects. Author
